How has your career grown and changed at Inova?
I started in Environmental Services in 1981. Since then, I moved into Materials Management, and eventually, I was promoted to Resource Coordinator. I do a little bit of everything now, and I love it.
What’s your average day at Inova like?
We start at 5 a.m. There’s a group of us, and we all have our specific departments. We stock the nursing stations, operating rooms and the emergency room. Now we have handheld devices, which are capable of reading bar codes. So all you have to do is scan and keep on truckin’. It saves a lot of time.
What’s made you stay at Inova all these years?
When I came to Inova, I said, "This is where I’m going to retire." The people here are wonderful. And Inova takes care of its employees. Continuing your education is one of the biggest perks. I graduated from Purdue University as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST).
What is your team like?
They are very hardworking and compassionate. They’ll do whatever it takes, and it’s nice to be part of a team that puts out so much for the patients. The majority of us have been here about 25 years. I have a great supervisor and director that I’ve seen grow professionally along with me.
What’s it like to work at Inova?
We have a diverse community in our department. We set standards of behavior that everyone follows. It makes a difference. Just being more compassionate to your coworkers, nurses and patients makes everything so much easier.
What achievement have you been most proud of at Inova?
My most recent achievement was being elected Employee of the Month, and being in the running for Employee of the Year. It makes me feel good. There are 11 other people who fit the criteria, and I am honored to be working among them.
